Jamel Brinkley's debut story collection, A Lucky Man, won the Ernest J. Gaines Award for Literary Excellence and was a finalist for the 2018 National Book Award. He teaches fiction at the Iowa Writers' Workshop.
In "I Happy Am," Freddy, age nine, takes a trip to the suburbs with St. Rita's Day Camp, but the visit is nothing like what he expected.
