Lee White, Assistant Professor at Augustana College, will lead a workshop where attendees will make their own calacas.
Attendees aged 16 and up will use simple materials (like paper mache, wire, glue, etc.) to create small, hand-crafted figurines decorated and painted in the "Day of the Dead" traditional theme. Calacas are most often used in festivals that celebrate death as a joyous, creative act of transition into an idealistic afterlife. Contrary to mourning the dead in grievance, these unique works of hand-crafted art act as signposts & salutations guiding the dead through the completion of their journey. Registration is required. Registration opens on September 28.
